Why Hemp? 🌿

At Buffalo Vale Distillery, we believe every botanical should earn its place in the glass. Hemp is no ordinary botanical — it brings history, character, sustainability and a distinctive savoury edge to our gin.
The important distinction between hemp and marijuana comes down to THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. Hemp is naturally very low in THC, the compound associated with the “high” in marijuana. Hemp Gin is crafted for flavour, texture and balance — not for any psychoactive effect. It contains non-detectable THC, but like all premium spirits, it should be enjoyed responsibly.
Beyond the misconceptions, hemp is a remarkable plant. It grows quickly, is naturally resilient, and is well suited to Australia’s diverse climate. It can thrive with minimal intervention and is widely recognised for its potential as a more sustainable crop. For us, that makes hemp an exciting botanical to work with — one that reflects both innovation and respect for the land.
In Hemp Gin, we use hemp seed for its subtle savoury character and smooth mouthfeel. Hemp seeds are naturally rich in plant-based protein and contain Omega 3, 6 and 9, giving them a reputation as one of nature’s great superfoods. While we use them for flavour rather than function, their natural depth and texture help create a gin that is genuinely different.
The result is a small-batch Australian Dry Gin with a crisp juniper backbone, a distinctive savoury note, and a smooth, lingering finish. It’s a gin that challenges convention while staying true to what matters most — balance, quality and drinkability.
